LAS VEGAS OUTLAWS, 1971-72 Season 30 page b&w program, autographed by U.S. Olympic Team players who upon returning from Japan played the Outlaws, February 19, 1972.     SOLD 8/2011
I watched this game, having a minor hockey team play a preliminary game versus a boys hockey team from the International Ice Palace.  Caraccioli brothers wrote a book  about the 1972 U.S.Olympic team Striking Silver, The Untold Story of America's Forgotten Hockey Team . I enjoyed reading this book in June 2008, however I feel obliged to point out a glaring historical error on Page 117 as follows: "Growing up, Ftorek lived for sports, whether it was hockey, soccer or baseball. But he wasn't the type that was born with a stick and puck in his crib. Oddly enough, Ftorek started out as a figure skater. With the Olympic figure skating coach working in Needham with his number one-ranked daughter, Ftorek's skating future may well have emulated Dick Button more than Bill Cleary." (correct: With the Olympic figure skating coach working in Needham with HER number one-ranked daughter,) "In 1961 (Ftorek was then 9 years old), following a tragic plane crash that killed the majority of the figure skating group and team as they returned from a competition in Europe, his aspirations turned to hockey full-time." correct from Wikipedia and my personal memory: "Sabena Flight 548, a Boeing 707 aircraft en route from New York International Airport to Brussels, Belgium's Zaventem Airport on February 15, 1961. The flight crashed during the approach for landing. All 18 athletes of the 1961 U.S. figure skating team and 16 family members, coaches, and officials died in the crash. The dead included, most notably, 9-time U.S. ladies' champion Maribel Vinson-Owen and her two daughters, reigning U.S. ladies' champion Laurence Owen, reigning U.S. pairs champions Maribel Y. Owen and her partner Dudley Richards," (whom I knew) The loss of the U.S. team was considered so catastrophic for the sport that the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships were cancelled."
